Marvento Duo explores musical translations in the flute and piano repertoire: text to melody, movement to sound, violin to flute, birdsong to sonata. Our choice of repertoire and rehearsal process have been shaped by wrestling with several questions. Here are some of them:
What new colors and timbres does the flute reveal in our transcription of Debussy's Sonata for Violin and Piano? How do composers speaking vastly different musical languages create music which quickly changes character? We're thinking specifically of Schumann's Romances, written in the 1800s and David Dzubay's Footprints, written shortly after the 9/11 attacks and responding specifically to that event. And finally, will you catch the Cape Cod whippoorwill call that Martinu transcribed into his Sonata for Flute and Piano?
